Pare, Kediri, is one of the
famous English learning places in Indonesia. Beside a fine place to improve
English, it has a lot of supporting facilities like book stores, public
libraries, internet cafes and many others.
As an alternative place to
learn English, Pare offers more affordable and intensive courses. For those
spending holiday, Pare serves exiting educative holiday programs, including
English areas.
Not only does Pare provide
English courses, but give other language course choises as well, like Arabic,
Japanese, Mandarin, and France. Therefore, Pare is an excellent choice to
strengthen language skills.
A friendly attitude of native
people makes Pare comfortable to stay and learn English. This leads Pare to be
an English society, popular as “Kampung Inggris” (Kampong of English).
The existence of “Kampung
Inggris” brings advantages which are gotten not only by people visiting Pare,
but also by societies living around. The phenomenon of “Kampung Inggris” gives
advantages such as increasing in the sector of education, social, and economy,
also encouraging between many tribes of Indonesian.
Many English courses and the
high rate interest to learn English have accumulated resident income. They can
increase their income via boarding house business, bicycle rentals, food stalls
and course places.
Summing up, we can say that is
a great phenomenon. For those seeking for affordable and intensive English
course, Pare is the right choice. For those dreaming big income, Pare can also
accommodate.
ENGLISH
CAMP
Many people who spend their
holiday to study English in Pare choose an English camp as their dormitory. An
English camp is a dormitory where its members have to speak English in their
daily activities. They decide to stay there because they hope it can be a fine
place to guide them to practice English.
Ben, a university student from
Jakarta coming to Pare chooses ‘Global English Camp’ as his dormitory. Because
he believes that the English camp can help him practice and improve his
skill by the help from the seniors in the camp.
In the same way, Rio, from
Cirebon coming to Pare has chosen Awarness English camp as his dormitory.
Because he is sure that he will be able to speak English fluently by more
practice in the camp.
But Olive, a university
student from Magelang, has different opinion from above. She prefers to stay at
the English camp because staying at lodging house has lower price than staying
at the English camp. It’s not guaranteed staying at the camp can make her speak
English fluently, clearly, and good. Because it will not certain effective to
run the program of the camp if the members are too busy with their activities.
Another assumption for Mr.
Abdul Rohim, the manager of Awarness center is that people come to the camp by
little English ability made them feel hard to follow the senior who guided to
speak in English.
As the fact above people who
spend their holiday to study English in Pare have the right choosen place to
stay as their needs.
PARE
IN MR. KALEND’S VIEW
The development of Pare image,
Tulungrejo, ang Pelem villages, Kediri, as a well-known “Kampung Inggris”
cannot be separated from the role of Mr. Muhammad Kalend. Born on February 20,
1945 with a wife Siti Fatimah and three children, Mr. Kalend is the founder and
the Director of Basic English Course (BEC), the first English course built in
Pare.
Though Mr. Kalend’s
educational background is not English, his English skill is undisputable. After
graduating from Sekolah Rakyat (former elementary school) in 1960, ” he
continued to Pendidikan Guru Agama (PGA) and graduated in 1964. Studying in
Kuliatul Muaslimin Al-Islamiah (KMI), Gontor, Ponorogo, from 1972 to 1976 was
his last formal education.
Mr. Kalend is inspired to
learn English by Ustadz Yazied, Darul Falah Islamic Boarding House organizer.
Mr. Kalend admires Ustadz Yazid who mastered nine languages only by reading.
Mr. Kalend’s achievement to
create a number of good qualified alumni should be appreciated, since some
English course organizers in Pare are his former students. But Mr. Kalend
expresses his concern over worse and worse motivation of those people learning
English today compared with his former students of 80s. “It’s a pathetic, their
attention is disturbed by many means of entertainment devices, television, and
mobile phones, instead of assisting them. They can stand to chat and watch
television for hours, and it seems to be a hard effort to read a book. Nearly
my 1980s students were well qualified to be English teachers supported by their
willingness to learn English”.
Mr. Kalend is very strict to
his teaching methods that he will expel students who have been in BEC more
than three months speaking other non-English in the BEC area.
Mr. Kalend states his
objection to those people naming Pare as “Kampung Inggris”. To him, there is no
real such thing. It’s just a mere name to attrack people to come to Pare. “You
won’t always find residents, vendors, or even English-studying visitors speak
English,” said Mr. Kalend. ”, he consider many English courses with more
attractive services offered in Pare may be the reason to this name.
As a founding father of
English course in Pare, he mention that not only English has the opportunity to
be developed but also other languages, such as Arabic, Japanese, etc. No one is
willing to initiate it, but he, “Any places in Indonesia can imitate Pare to
be a center language study”. To do that requires a great determination and
patience. We must not only put hope to government assist but also actively
explore potential opportunities in Pare.
He also mentions the beneficial
effects that can be earned by local residents, for example various work fields
that can be raised.
